Ken McMillan, a member of The Fokker Aircraft Recovery Team (Dive Team) will speak about the recovery this past July of the 600+ pound engine and other parts of a Fokker aircraft at Charron Lake in northeast Manitoba. This has been a 30+ year search for a rare bush plane lost in a snow storm on December 10th, 1931.  Mr. McMillan will bring photos and videos to the meeting, as well as his first-hand experience on the project. http://www.fokkeraircraftrecovery.ca/  (Fascinating site containing several pages of detailed info)

GUEST SPEAKER for the July Members Meeting: Leonard Fallowfield and Lt. Col. Charley Fox, RCAF ret'd told of their recent adventures in England.  The members present enjoyed the slide show put together by Leonard’s grandson, and it was easy to tell from the details and the enthusiasm in their voices this is a trip Len and Charley will long remember.  Thank you again for sharing this adventure with us!

THANK YOU: to Greg Tyrell for his many years of involvement in CHAA.  As a supportive member, pilot, fundraiser, barnstormer, Board member, President, C Tech O and many other positions, he has brought extensive revenues and enthusiastic energies to CHAA.  Those of us who know him best appreciate the endless hours he has given to CHAA and the love he has for the organization.  Thank you, Greg.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS: Marion Bennell This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

AUGUST: After 38 new members in June, July was a much quieter month.  Unfortunately the FLY DAY on July 22 was rained out, so for those members holding gift certificates and hoping to have their ride on August 19, September 9 or 10...plan to get to the airport early.  Flying will start about 0900 hours and go as long as there are people for rides.
GIFT CERTIFICATE HOLDERS: if you are unable to take your ride at this time (especially if the weather does not cooperate or because of illness), contact Marion at 519-633-0053 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , and your certificate will be extended for one year.
The TIGER MOTH took to the air on Saturday, August 5 when Bill Long and Dave Martin gave it a thorough checkout.  The Moth started right off and it was great to see it back in the air.  It will be available for rides at the upcoming Fly Days.
JULY: June was a busy month for membership. At the June 17 Members Flyday, six adults and two Harvard Hawks were signed up.  Four members with gift certificates as well as seven other members had their first rides in a CHAA Harvard. At the Flyday, everyone was pleased to welcome Bessy’s former owners Tony and Mary Swain who had flown in from Vancouver the night before. Tony was seen up on the wing inspecting the plane, and later he went up for a ride.

At the Aviation Expo in Oshawa June 23-25 CHAA pilots once again were very busy, as 18 rides were taken.  Welcome to those who are CHAA’s latest members and thank you to our pilots.

STORES NEWS: Wayne Wilkins This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

We had a very successful weekend at Geneseo. Sales were over $5000, the best of any event in a long time! My thanks go to the Team at Genny: Carl Sapelak, Kip and Margaret Rose Davis, Marie Donnelly and son Callum, Terry Scott, Jerry Jones, Ray Whittemore and Sandra Sparkes.

A pilot program is underway to include Stores Merchandise in an Online Store Front working within the Recovery Team’s new website. Thanks to Bill Tully for his work on this project.

In other news, discussions are being held to finalize an arrangement that will enable CHAA to accept VISA, MasterCard and AMEX directly.

CHAA UPDATES: Roy Venn

The annual inspection of the Tiger Moth was complete on 2nd August, signed out on the 5th and was in the air for a good hour on Saturday morning with Dave Martin and Bill Long. Then in the afternoon B. Long

started Roger Harris's checkout. A couple of minor adjustments need to be made, but they were happy with the aircraft's performance.

The last bits are ready to go on the Yale and then the paperwork will be shipped to Transport Canada. The delay was in waiting for the arrival of a couple of items. No sense sending the paper off if we aren't ready for the inspection at any moment.

Bessy is at York for her annual and ran into a couple of snags that delayed completion of the annual for the Simcoe fly-past last Saturday, so (instead of a three plane formation) we went with a two ship fly-past completed by Dave Martin and Dan Cameron.

CHAA DIVE RECOVERY TEAM WEBSITE: www.chaa-recovery.ca

Presently, this site is under construction.  Will be up and running soon (expected date: August 15, 2006) with many changes and improvements. Keep checking.

MONTHLY BINGOS: This is an important aspect of CHAA’s yearly fundraising and is held monthly in London ON. For info on how you can help with this and other aspects of CHAA’s fundraising projects, contact Chair, Bill Shepard This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

2006 CALENDARS: $2 each. All funds coming in now are profit, so let’s sell as many of the remaining copies as possible. By July 31, all remaining calendars were to have been returned to Stores area at the Hangar and all monies given to Ila Fallowfield for banking; records show some are still outstanding.

Until next time, clear skies, safe flights and smooth landings!

Sandra Sparkes, CHAA Member
