Charley Fox, RCAF ret'd will tell of their recent adventures in England. Mr.
Fox will share tales of his awesome Spitfire ride and more.
-----------------------------------------
DEEPEST
SYMPATHIES are
extended to Marie and Tony Donnelly on the recent loss of a cherished
loved one; our thoughts are with them.
BELATED
CONGRATULATIONS
to Bill Tully (from the
Dive Team) and his wife Colleen who were married in Mexico in February.
The Position of CHAA STORES
MERCHANDISE MANAGER
has been filled by Wayne Wilkins; Bruce Tapp will continue to look after selling
of Stores at the hangar and Carl Sapelak will take Stores items to airshows.
Greg Tyrell and Ray Whittemore are assisting Wayne with this transition of
responsibility. Thank you to Wayne for taking on this important job and to the
others (Bruce, Carl, Greg and Ray) for continuing to support CHAA.
Wayne sent along this message on June 26: “Just
got home from Canadian Aviation Expo in Oshawa with Greg Burnard. We showed
Bessy off to the COPA folks and had a chance to talk with Tony and Mary Swain.
We all had a great time! I want to thank Carl Sapelak for his work handling our
merchandizing for this 3 day show. Also, my thanks to Bill Ritchie for coming
out Friday & Sunday to help at Oshawa, especially staying late Sunday to help
Carl pack up. Thanks for your confidence and I look forward to working with
everyone.”
SPEEDY
RECOVERY: Our
thoughts are with CHAA member Stan Janicek and his family
following his successful cancerous brain operation which took place in June. His
wife Doreen noted he was in some painful discomfort but otherwise everything
went as well as expected.
GUEST
SPEAKER for the June Members Meeting:
Mr. James Essex of Petersburg,
Ontario. Mr. Essex spoke of his experiences serving for five years with
the Royal Canadian Navy where he saw action in HMCS Prince Robert and HMCS
Uganda operating the Radar systems. He also told us of the little-known or
talked about attacks by German submarines in the St. Lawrence Seaway during
WWII. He has written a couple of books (“Victory in the St Lawrence” and
“Mutiny-The Odyssey of HMCS Uganda” available at Spitfire Emporium
www.spitcrazy.com) and showed us
an interesting taped-for-television interview on this topic. Thoroughly
enjoyable speaker!
MEMBER
COMMENTS: We
always appreciate hearing from members (Sometimes it’s how we know anyone is
reading Harvard Happenings!), and last month’s email from Life member John
Ashbridge (after he read info presented in HH on our speaker for June) was no
exception. John let us know:
“One does not serve “on” –
but rather “IN” – a ship. It’s the same as suggesting one lives “on” a house.
Also, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships are never referred to as “The” HMCS, simply
as “HMCS”. Otherwise, the vessel becomes “The Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship”,
etc. HMCS Prince Robert and HMCS Uganda are the correct titles.”
(You’ll note the corrections have been made in the above info on last month’s
speaker.) Sincere thank you to John for taking the time to send along his email.
A VISIT TO CHAA:
On June 16, Carla Cameron took her grade 7 students to the hangar for a
tour...she sends along this report: “My students enjoyed a truly memorable
experience at the Tillsonburg Airport. Dan Cameron and Brandon Zimmerman hosted
my grade 7 class for a tour of the CHAA facilities. The tour not only broadened
the students understanding of the theory of flight but it introduced them to
possible careers within the aviation industry. The students eagerly asked
questions and were extremely interested and impressed with the facilities. The
highlight of the tour was the experience in the procedure simulator. Brandon
patiently coached each and every student as they experienced the ride of a
lifetime. We then enjoyed a barbecue lunch while watching the Harvard in action.
Look out for these future CHAA members! A great big thank you goes out to Dan
and Brandon for taking the time to spend with these very grateful students.”

Greg Burnard and Greg Tyrell represented CHAA at this event. To the
delight of an appreciative crowd, they flew in formation with CHAA members Hannu
Halminen and Stan Miller. Several people took backseat rides over the weekend.
Carl Sapelak was there with Stores, assisted by Bill Ritchie and Wayne Wilkins.

Johnny Curran and his family were on the ground in Cambridge ON as the
four Harvards flew over to open the Canada Day Parade. Our Harvards, flown by
Harvey Roddick, Greg Burnard, Greg Tyrell and Dan Cameron, did four passes over
a very appreciative crowd before returning home to Tillsonburg.

RESULTS OF
July 1 T33 Meeting:
Chaired by Director Bob Hewitt.
Two ideas to be pursued...Get all the details required to submit a bid and
arrange to see the planes at Mountainview. Seven members attended meeting
(looking into the idea of obtaining T33s) and other members have since shown an
interest by e-mail. Many pros and cons were discussed. There is much work to be
done if such a venture were to proceed, so the more involved the better. It was
generally agreed that such an undertaking would be done as a separate arm of
CHAA, like the Dive Team, but definitely a part of CHAA and under the Board of
Directors. All are invited to join this fledgling interest group, and persons
interested who are non-CHAA members should join CHAA to take part.
2006
CALENDARS:
Now being sold at $2 each.
Calendars are being well received at airshows. All
funds coming in now are profit, so let’s sell as many of the
remaining calendars as possible. NOTE: By July
31, turn in all remaining calendars to Stores area at the Hangar and
give all monies to Ila Fallowfield for banking. Thank you to all members who
have supported this project.
