2006
Calendars: by Pat Hanna, Bill
Shepard and Sandra Sparkes
Background: Following in the footsteps
of Janis Bennell and Greg Burnard who have produced the CHAA calendar for the
passed few years, we’ve worked with Bill Sutherland and Gib Newman of the 404
Kitchener/Waterloo Wing to produce a high quality 16 month aviation calendar.
Photo choices: In choosing the photos,
we attempted to include only Canadian owned aircraft. We’ve used photos of
CHAA’s aircraft as well as that of: The Great War Flying Museum, Ed Russell’s
planes, the Lancaster out of Hamilton and many more. The photos chosen by CHAA
are the work of members Pat Hanna and Eric Dumigan; we thank them for their
generosity in freely donating their talents for this fundraising project.
Cost: At last word, the calendars were
to be picked up today from NORCARD in London, and they will be available at the
meeting on Tuesday evening at a cost of $10.
Mail out: In addition, a copy of the
calendar will be mailed to all members not able to attend the meeting; a letter
from President Greg Tyrell is included with each. Orders for extra copies are
coming in from all across Canada; we’ve printed only 2000 so get yours early. If
you wish further copies, contact Sandra

in our calendar: Tillsonburg Municipal Airport, Moosehead, Stauffer Motors Ltd.,
Spitfire Emporium, Canada Stampings, Coyles Country Store, Jimmy’s Restaurant,
Trevor McNally and Spectrum Aviation.
The fundraising committee appreciates the
support shown by CHAA members to keep our airplanes flying.

Service Crew Update: from
Service Crew Chief, Al Spiers
On Sept 8 at 20.00hrs the Brownsville Fire Dept
arrived at Hangar 1 to put on a demonstration of their fire fighting equipment.
They had been asked to attend by the CHAA Service Unit. They arrived with a
pumper truck, a rescue truck and a foam producing truck. Along with Fire Chief
Dirk Verboom, they had 17 volunteer fire fighters in attendance. Brownsville
Fire Dept is the group responsible for covering the Tillsonburg airport.
After a brief introduction, the group of 15
CHAA service crew and pilots in attendance were given a review of the equipment
on the vehicles and how and when it is used. We were shown the various nozzle
attachments, how foam is produced, “jaws of life”, portable generators,
compressor, hand held extinguishers and other emergency items they carry on
board. We were then broken down into groups and as one group was given a “hands
on” demonstration on how to extinguish a “live” fire with a hand held unit, the
others were involved with a discussion on how the fire fighters approach a fire,
how they assess it and what is required to control the situation. A
demonstration of foam produced from the foam truck and how it is applied was
shown to us by three members of the unit. The fire department was also given a
review of the onboard extinguishers of our Harvards and a general layout of the
hangar.
The Fire Dept was thanked for their attendance
and appreciation was shown by the CHAA members. A review later of a number of
the CHAA participants indicated they appreciated the demonstration and the
information received from Chief Verboom and his crew. Overall, it was a very
successful event.

Standards and Safety Committee Update:

On Saturday, October 8, the newly formed

Director (and Mentor for this first meeting) Bob Hewitt. The committee consists
of the C ops O, C Tech O, Chief Pilot, a member of the Aerobatics team, Service

CHAA Dive
Recovery Team Experiences “Hard Hat” Diving
By Chris Venn
When one goes diving, equipment is
critical. Diving is like going to the moon – there is no air to breath unless
you bring it, and you must protect yourself from the environment. The Dive
Recovery Team uses some very advanced equipment and computers to conduct its
underwater searches and we trust our equipment implicitly. But imagine taking a
bucket, turning it upside down, pumping some air into it through a hose and
diving with it. That’s exactly what several members of the CHAA Dive Recovery
Team did on July 17th, 2005.
At the Annual Shipwreck Symposium,
we met Mike Babiski who spent several years as a commercial diver before
starting to collect historical dive equipment. Mike offered to spend a day
introducing us to the original dive equipment from the turn of century – and we
jumped at the chance. Using the excellent facilities at London Scuba Centre
owned by Terry Kovacevic in London, Ontario, Mike gave us an historical overview
of the equipment, and then allowed us to dive in the pool with this vintage
hardware, Using air pumped into the helmets (commonly called Hard Hats), we
experienced the type of gear that the pioneers of diving used at some tremendous
depths. It was fascinating to learn the history, understand the differences in
the equipment, experience the weight of the gear and get a different taste of
our marine heritage. Our thanks go out to Mike for giving of his time and
knowledge to make this happen.

Air
Cadet Flyday: from Kip Davis
CHAA was pleased to be hosting the Havoc
Squadron on September 25 at the Tillsonburg airport. This was meant to be an
opportunity for Cadets to learn about the North American Harvard and its roll in
the British Commonwealth Air Training Program during WWII. Due to the dreaded
“red tape”, the event has been scrubbed; hopes are it will be held in 2006.
Thanks to the following for their efforts: Johnny Curran, Greg Burnard, Bill
Long, Brandon Zimmerman, the Rice Brothers, Gib Newman and all pilots who had
volunteered to participate.
