HARVARD HAPPENINGS

November 2006

CHAA P.O. Box 175, Tillsonburg, Ontario N4G 4H5

NEXT CHAA MEMBERS MEETING: Tuesday, November 21, 2006 1930hrs

Guest Speaker: CHAA Member, Ken Arnott

NOV 11   Woodstock, ON     Remembrance Day Ceremonies and Parade

Weather prevented this flyover from taking place. Harvards were to be flown by Kent Beckham, Pete Spence, Greg Tyrell and Dave Hewitt (all backseats were filled).

NOV 11   Toronto, ON          Remembrance Day Ceremonies and Parade

& Flypast over Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital

Weather kept this flyover from happening. Ken Arnott had worked diligently with the Protocol Office of the City of Toronto plus Canadian Warplane Heritage to arrange for the flypast of four Harvards and aircraft from CWH. Many thanks to Ken for all his efforts and to Greg Burnard, Hannu Halminen, Dan Cameron and Tony Donnelly for being ready to do the Harvard flypast (all backseats were filled).

NOV 5     Shedden, ON

At 11:00AM, four Harvards (flown by Dan Cameron, Tony Donnelly, Greg Tyrell and Greg Burnard) did two passes over the Fingal site.  (backseats were filled)

NOV 5     Waterloo, ON         Unveiling of Canadian Veterans Memorial

At 12:45PM, after refueling at Tillsonburg, the same four pilots/aircraft mentioned above did three passes directly over Veterans’ Green Park in Waterloo, ON.  where hundreds of veterans, military personnel, cadets, politicians, Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor - His Honour James K. Bartleman and onlookers were gathered to see the unveiling of this magnificent tribute to our veterans. From the ground looking up, our Harvard pilots did an excellent job on all three passes and the crowd was truly appreciative. There was also a flyover by the B-25 Mitchell from CWH in Hamilton.

Excellent photos of the Flypasts by CHAA and CWH, the ceremony, the unveiling of the memorial:

MEMBERSHIP NEWS: Marion Bennell  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

The last month has been relatively quiet - very few flights for new members as the weather was not cooperating; several of the holders of gift certificates did manage to get their rides between rains.
If anyone has contact with member John Olav Wiese in Oslo, Norway would they please contact me as we have an address for him which is not working.
Regarding renewals, to date nearly 130 have renewed for 2007.  This year CHAA would appreciate having you fill in the "I AM INTERESTED" area on the form as CHAA is compiling a data base of members' interests for quick reference when CHAA is looking for members to assist on committees, at airshows, social functions, fundraising and with Stores.  To those who have filled in this area, THANK YOU.
There is some confusion regarding the 2007 RENEWAL FORM sent with the fundraising letter.  If you have already renewed please disregard this form; several have submitted their renewal for the second time and all these members are being contacted to clear up this matter.

Your renewal sticker will be mailed to you in the December issue of the ROAR.  If you receive your ROAR electronically, your sticker will be mailed as soon as your form is received.
Gift certificates are available for Christmas giving.  Contact info is: Marion Bennell at 519-633-0053 or

     HANGAR NEWS: Roy Venn

The Tiger Moth (COE) has been moved to the north side of the main hangar and has been replaced with "MTX". Some work was done over the summer and it is hoped that more will get done over the winter months in the heated side of the hangar. It is planned that in the next few weeks, the engine from "MTX" will be off to Covington's for overhaul and will replace the one on "UFZ" which will then go for its overhaul. A good plan and as we all know it is going to take money; as usual all contributions will be gratefully received and receipted.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY: Our thoughts are with Roger Harris and his family on the recent loss of his father.

SPEEDY RECOVERY: Best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery go out to all CHAA members who are recovering from surgeries and illnesses.  On a specific note, Kent Beckham reports that his Dad, Norm Beckham is “making great strides, literally” at Parkwood Hospital (SE corner of Commissioners & Wellington) in London, ON.  After recent surgery, Norm has been fitted with two prosthetics and is undergoing physiotherapy at Parkwood which includes work on parallel bars and assistance (for now) with walking behind a wheeled walker with hand brakes.  Kent says, “If you're in the area, stop in for a visit. Dad’s eyesight is nothing wonderful, but he recognizes voices quite easily.”

CONGRATULATIONS, Charley Fox!  On November 3, 2006 the Parket at the London International Airport, London ON was officially opened and named after CHAA’s own Charley Fox.  On hand (in addition to Charley’s family) were airport management, media members, local politicians and the 412 Squadron from Ottawa.  A reception followed at the 427 Wing.

CHAA FUNDRAISER: A sincere thank you to all members who are responding to CHAA’s recent fundraiser mailout.

CHAA WINTER MEETINGS: December 16, 2006 will see the start of our Saturday morning meetings.
