The latest restoration news.....(late June, 2006)

"With a few minor things left to do like, radio and ELT installations the Yale is coming right along. Can-Ag has submitted the paper work to Transport Canada along with a cheque for the Airworthiness Certificate and the letter authorizing Military Marks has been received.

We are looking good - it is just a matter of time, as we wait for TC to do their thing and then we will be able to get to engine run-ups, taxi tests and hopefully into the air later this summer".

-Roy Venn

CHAA Board of Directors News: Past President Roy Venn

The past couple of months have seen a number of changes at the CHAA Board level.

-About mid-April, Tony Donnelly resigned as Chief Pilot and as a Board Member. With the Formation Weekend close at hand, Tony was immediately replaced as Chief Pilot by Dave Martin.

-Within a couple of weeks, Greg Tyrell, a long-serving Board Member, also submitted his resignation and removed himself from the positions he held of Vice President and member in charge of Stores. Greg has agreed to stay on as C Tech O until annual inspections are completed.

-The position of our Stores/Merchandise Manager is open and the Board is hopeful someone will step forward and assume this responsibility.  Bruce Tapp and Carl Sapelack are both onside and Greg has advised he will assist...it needs an overseer.

-At the May Board meeting, on advice from my doctor, I (Roy Venn) turned in my resignation as President.

-Your remaining Board of Directors is actively working on your behalf.

NEXT CHAA MEETING: Tuesday, June 20, 2006 1930hrs

HARVARD HAWKS PROGRAM:

Kip Davis and other dedicated CHAA members recently prepared and presented a four Saturday course for Harvard Hawks which included info on the Link trainer, the Theory of Flight and other interesting aviation related themes. A great deal of time and energy went into this program and we are hopeful the two young people who took part found it to be of interest.

AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE: Greg Tyrell, C Tech O

All Harvards are serviceable and the radios are in the process of being installed in RZW.  A big thank you to Larry Lysiuk for getting two sets of King KY 196 radios for both UFZ and RZW. Some minor snags are being identified as RZW is being flown more, nothing concerning safety or the airworthiness.  The Moth annual is due and will be done shortly.  Further consultation will happen with Tom Dietrich and Les Balla about the Moth so it will easier to operate this year.  Both of these members are well experienced with the aircraft and have a vast amount of knowledge.

2006 CALENDARS:

Our 2006 Calendars are now being sold at $2 each.  By the end of July, all remaining copies are to be returned to the Stores area at the Hangar and all monies are to be given to Ila Fallowfield for banking.  All funds coming in now are profit, so let’s sell as many of the remaining calendars as possible.  Thank you to all members who have supported this project.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE: Sandra Sparkes

Our meeting was held recently at the home of Bill and Cathy Shepard in Woodstock.  Bill forgot to tell Cathy we were coming, so when she received a call from a strange man asking how to get to her home from the 401 (traveling through blinding rain from Sarnia) she did her best to give directions and smartly called Bill to find out what was up. Soon after that, I arrived at their home (having traveled through a flooded area caused by the heavy rains happening all that day and evening).  One of Bill’s daughters met me on the front porch and I entered to find their home (the whole street, the whole town in fact) in total darkness!  Bill eventually arrived home, by which time Marg Hollister (Tillsonburg), Pat and Ruth Hanna (Cambridge), Ken Arnott (Toronto), Wayne Wilkins (Sarnia), Walt Irie and Maureen Merlo (Ingersoll) and I had started the meeting in candlelight.  We were together for over 2 1/2  hours and the power never did come on! We are wondering if this is the first CHAA meeting conducted in the dark... Whatever the answer to that question, we were quite productive in formulating an overall fundraising plan.  Anyone interested in helping with fundraising in any capacity, please contact any of the members mentioned above. Apparently Maureen was wearing her new engagement ring that night, but it was so dark no one saw it; at least she and Walt had an evening out --- complete with candlelight!

Until next time, clear skies, safe flights and smooth landings!

OTHER CHAA NEWS

Congratulations to all those involved in the Formation Training Weekend from the 2 - 4th June. I am not going to try to name you just in case I miss someone. The weather cooperated fairly well I think only two flights were missed on Saturday due to a severe  storm that ripped through the area. The aircraft all behaved themselves thanks to all the work done by the ground / service crews.
Operations ran a tight ship and kept the briefings pretty well on schedule, chased the pilots to complete the logs and made sure the coffee pot was full. When all was said and done, the FAST check pilot (Bill Long) appproved the qualifications of two new wingmen in the persons of Dan Cameron and Tony Donnelly. Congratulations to you both. Hopefully over the summer others will be able to develop their formation flying skills and we will be able to qualify more pilots.

Friday we had some visitors from Maple Manor Nursing Home  in Tillsonburg. They had been out for a drive and dropped in
for a visit. Then on Saturday Shadow Gardens Nursing Home from Aylmer came by for an hour or so.

Any comments on the activities at the Elm Hurst will have to  come from those in attendance. No complaints were heard so
it is assumed all went well.
